Measurement Accuracy and Limitations

The Sound Latency Test produces a round-trip audio latency measurement using browser-based cross-correlation analysis. This is a genuinely useful diagnostic tool, but it has real limitations that every user should understand before acting on a result.

Browser-based measurement is not equivalent to certified professional measurement. Professional audio latency measurement uses dedicated hardware interfaces with calibrated measurement microphones, ASIO or Core Audio driver direct access, and measurement software with sub-millisecond accuracy verification. The Sound Latency Test operates within the browser’s Web Audio API environment and is subject to the scheduling uncertainty, OS audio processing, and microphone response variables inherent to that environment. Practical accuracy is ±3–5 ms on a single run and ±1–2 ms averaged across multiple runs — not sub-millisecond precision.

OS audio processing affects results. Operating systems apply automatic gain control (AGC), noise suppression, and echo cancellation to microphone input by default on many configurations. These processes can alter the captured waveform and shift the cross-correlation peak by 1–3 ms. Results obtained with OS audio processing active are estimates, not exact hardware measurements. Consumer microphone frequency response limitations. Consumer microphones — including built-in laptop microphones — have uneven frequency response and roll off at frequencies below approximately 100–200 Hz. This affects the fidelity of the captured tone burst waveform and can introduce small timing errors in the cross-correlation analysis. Results obtained using a consumer microphone are accurate enough for diagnostic purposes but should not be treated as precision hardware specifications.

Results are specific to your environment at the time of testing. The latency figure measured by this tool reflects your specific browser, operating system version, audio driver configuration, and hardware at the moment of the test. It is not a published hardware specification. The same hardware tested under different system loads, different driver versions, or different browser versions may produce different results. This is expected behaviour, not a tool error.

The tool cannot isolate hardware and software latency separately. The round-trip figure includes the combined contribution of your browser’s Web Audio API pipeline, your operating system’s audio buffer, and your hardware’s input and output circuits. These components cannot be separated by browser-based measurement alone.
